Yep, just got a new iMac. 24″, 3.06ghz duo processors, 4gb RAM, 512mb ATI card, 720gb HDD…goddamn this thing is beautiful!
I’m still using my Tascam US-122 as an audio interface, which works great on it. I’m still going to finish the Shiv-r album on my VAIO (which suddenly looks so diminuitive…), because I’ve got it set up the way I like and I don’t want to break the creative flow by migrating to a new machine. This is probably just as well though because I think we only have 1 or 2 more songs to write and the album will be done.
I’m not 100% sure yet, but I may also make the jump from Cubase to Logic with the move to the Mac. Maybe I will even stop using the first edition of HALion as my main sampler, imagine that!
I’ve already hooked up a MIDI keyboard (the LP) and tried some ROMplers and soft-synths out on the iMac. There is absolutely no perceivable latency between hitting the keys and the notes coming out. On my VAIO, soft-synths are barely playable due to latency. This bodes well for my love of this new machine when I do make the big switch. I can’t wait to load it up with a 100-layer song and really try to freak this machine out!
Most of my synth work comes from hardware sources, but with the processing power of the iMac I should be able to really delve into hardcore ROMplers and other resource-hungry goodness, which I was never really able to do before.
Of course, I’m still getting my head around the OS. Being unable to alt-tab is really fucking with my chi but there’s a key on the keyboard which lets me choose between open applications which works well instead.
The sheer size of the display is the real killer though, at least compared to what I’m used to. I’m committed to sticking with the Mac OS and I’m sure I’ll learn to love it soon enough, though I might try installing Windows through Boot Camp for games or something.

oh oh oh, not being to alt tab pissed me off
didnt take me long to find command-tab to switch between applications
but this still shitted me, because (as you probably noticed it doesnt switch between windows in the same application as well like windows)
but then more recently after i got frustrated switching windows in Reason, and made a few google searches i found command ~
and everything is now right with the world.
